Most times when one talks of influence, people rush to leadership. We think one cannot be of any influence if they are not a leader and whereas leadership might be a catalyst to making a difference, it’s not all it takes.

Influence can be defined as, “earning the right to be heard so that others are moved to their best.” This can be done silently, you can move someone to being by better by being better. It’s what is normally referred to as being an example. “Like salt shaken out, influence is hard to see, but its flavor is impossible to miss.”

March is a month for celebrating women. There is International women’s day, Mary’s day and also mother’s day (which is every day). Let’s not just stop at celebrating women and for us the women, let’s not just stop at being women by nature but be of an influence and play a positive role in making our world and the lives of the people we associate with better.

Proverbs 31 describes a virtuous woman who leads her home with integrity, discipline, and giftedness. This wife is a leader not because she tries to be one or because of any outstanding leadership or political position but because of who she is, what she does and how she does whatever she does and for the people she cares about.

Who is a woman of influence?  Who is a Virtuous woman?

She is trustworthy. (Proverbs 31:11) the heart of her husband ‘safely’ trusts her. Keyword being safely. There is one thing to be trusted and another to be safely trusted. Someone cannot safely trust you if they don’t believe in you. We play an important role in the lives of the people we associate with and if the advice you give to someone isn’t to make their lives better or if the life you live is reckless, it will be hard for someone else to trust you with their own life. So let’s try to lives carefully with integrity and respect so that other people will safely trust us with their lives to make them better (Proverbs 31:12).

She is a hard worker a planner and she is protective. What we do speaks a lot about us and doing nothing also speaks a lot about us. There is one thing to sit and wait for everything to be served at the table for you and another to work so hard to see that the best is served at the table. A child waits to be served food so if you sit and wait to be taken care of, then you’re a child not a woman. A woman of influence is a hard worker and a planner. “She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.”-proverbs 31:27. A woman of influence doesn’t waste her precious time in gossip and idleness but spends her time planning for her life and the lives of the people around her, watching over them and making sure that everything is in order (being protective). She thinks about today and tomorrow.

She meets the needs of her home and invests for her household. Verse 15 and 16, the virtuous woman rises early to provide for her home – not wakes up her husband to provide for his home. She considers a field and buys it from her profits – not waits for her husband to invest in property for their home. Some of us say we want to get married to rich men who have already invested enough to provide for us and later when tragedies fall, we start running and then you hear of divorce and separation all because we can’t provide for ourselves. But a woman of influence doesn’t wait for her husband to provide for the home, she takes it upon herself to invest and provide for her family and together with her husband they make their home better. It doesn’t have to be just your home, you can make the difference in your community, at your work place and among your friends. Don’t wait for someone else to act, rise up and be of a difference – positively.

She keeps herself in shape. Now this is where we are all eager to achieve. Looking beautiful, feeling nice and keeping in shape. Verse 17 says that she girds herself with strength and strengthens her arms. She doesn’t just beautify herself for appearance but to keep strong in order to work harder. Beauty gives confidence but especially beauty with in not just the outside appearance. Don’t just work on your beauty on the outside otherwise you will only be hired for atmosphere. Have the beauty both on the outside, the strength to motivate you and keep you going and the kindness in your heart. Open your mouth only with wisdom and not just to charm the people around you.

She is compassionate and unselfish. Women are known for their kindness but not all of us reflect it. Verse 20 – she extends her hand to the poor, she reaches out her hands to the needy. A woman of influence has compassion for others. She strives for everyone to be their best and she aims at moving the people in her life towards positivity. Don’t be the woman that wants to develop alone, don’t be the jealous woman, the selfish woman who won’t advise her fellow woman to be better. Be competitive because you want to achieve a lot not because you want to better that someone else. Have compassion for the needy because it’s from how we treat others that we will learn how to treat our family. You cannot win alone.

A woman of influence, a virtuous woman gets her motivation from her family, her husband, and her own works and from God’s word (Proverbs 31:28-31). What does your family see in you? How do they perceive you? Does your family respect you?
